A change in your personal situation such as getting married, having a baby, or losing health coverage can make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period known as a Qualifying Life Event (QLE), allowing you to make changes to your benefits outside of Open Enrollment. Here are a few example of QLE’s, though not comprehensive, that may make you eligible for a Special Enrollment Period:
- Loss of health coverage
- Eligibility for new health coverage
- Marriage
- Divorce
- Having a baby or adopting a baby
- Death in the family
Here is what you need to do to make changes to your benefits:
- Print the Qualified Life Event Benefit Change Form
- Review the benefits you are eligible to change
- Obtain documentation to support the change in status (i.e. marriage license, divorce decree, hospital announcement, etc.)
- Submit the QLE form and documentation to Human Resources
All requests and documentation must be received by Human Resources no later than 31 days after the date of the qualifying event. After 31 days, you will be unable to make changes to your benefits until there is another qualifying life event or open enrollment.
